Choosing The Correct Backsplash For Your Space

The splashback is a homeowner's dream by protecting your walls from dreaded kitchen & bathroom splashes and stains. This added hygienic element can truly save your walls from years of damage while also being easy to maintain. Splashbacks can offer a visual enhancement with the ability to turn a simple room design into a creative space bursting with personality due to the large range of colours, patterns, and materials available. In this piece, we are going to discuss some of the factors you may want to consider when choosing your new splashback.

How the correct backsplash can elevate your space

Splashback's popularity is at an all-time high! They can not only enhance the overall look of a kitchen and bathroom, but their practical benefits are most important to improving your kitchen cooking and cleaning experience! There are many materials that your splashback can be made of, such as quartz, marble, wood, and of course, plastic! While each material has many pros and cons, you must examine your space to ensure you choose the correct material for your needs!

Consider what your backsplash will be used for

Considering what your backsplash will be used for is super important for deciding on the correct material! You don’t want to end up choosing a material, installing it, paying for it, and then discovering it was the wrong choice! For example, glass may look great, but it could easily shatter if a strong object hits it, such as a frying pan. Stainless steel is typically a safe choice, especially for commercial kitchens, but steel can dent over time. If the splashback is for your kitchen sink, then plastic may be the right choice for you as it will only be splashed with water, while some plastic may not be the best choice for behind the cooker, as the heat could potentially damage the material. However, our Plexiglas® Hi-Gloss range has a higher resistance to heat and, therefore, is suitable providing the following statements are observed

  • The constant temperature remains equal to or below 105°C.
  • The distance between the outer edge of a ceramic hob and the wall must be at least 60mm.
  • The distance between the outer edge of a gas hob and the wall must be at least 200mm.

Our Hi-Gloss range is a larger cost than the standard gloss option, but the unique depth of colour gives it a premium look! If you are after a more sophisticated aesthetic, the Hi-Gloss range could be the one for you!

Consider a plastic backsplash

Our range of acrylic splashbacks works well in the kitchen, bathroom, shed, or anywhere you need wall protection. Why should you opt for a plastic backsplash?

  • Budget-friendly material
  • Acrylic splashbacks come in a variety of colours.
  • Acrylic splashbacks are super easy to install due to it being a lightweight material for both professionals and DIY. Save on labour and install it yourself! Watch our handy how-to-install video.
  • Acrylic splashbacks are easy to clean and maintain. A simple wipe-down with a mild cleaning solution is usually sufficient to maintain its appearance. Unlike some of its counterparts such as tile, there are no grout lines to keep clean! However, there are some factors to consider with an acrylic splashback (see below)
  • They can be customised due to being easily cut to fit specific measurements, which is very useful for kitchens and bathrooms with unusual layouts.
  • Acrylic is resistant to bacteria and mould, which makes it a hygienic choice for your kitchens and bathrooms

Maintaining and cleaning your backsplash

Clean acrylic splashbacks with a soft microfibre cloth using warm water and washing up liquid. For an extra shine, you can use a cleaner specifically recommended for use with plastics, such as Vuplex Anti-Static cleaner, which is available on our website. Do not use abrasive pads, still brushes, or rough paper, as this will scratch the surface.

Do not use window cleaner, alcohol or ammonia products (found in many all-purpose household cleaners), chemical sprays or abrasive cleaners. These products can cause various problems, including the plastic going cloudy/opaque. Lastly, be careful to never use the same cloth you clean other household items with, as there may be remaining residue and chemicals on the cloth that will damage the acrylic.
